The time has come to start building permanent parking for the new hospital, and with that comes some more temporary changes to MMH parking.

These changes will take be implemented as of Wednesday, March 13, 2024.

With the removal of the former Seven Sisters facility, PCL will begin work in front of the main and emergency entrance areas of the new hospital. For this work to happen most of the temporary gravel parking lot on Tetrault Street will be removed. The area will be fenced off and become part of the construction site.

To make up for lost spots and help ease parking challenges until the new, permanent parking is available, we will be making the following changes:

    • Adding a row of temporary parking spots, from east to west, along the hospital access road that runs from Tetrault Street to the existing hospital’s Emergency Department
    • Temporarily reconfiguring the parking next to the new Seven Sisters parking lot to accommodate more vehicles
    • Finding alternative off-site parking for NH service vehicles not needed on site at all times

We understand this is not an ideal situation. It is challenging and inconvenient. If possible, we ask you to consider:

    • Arriving early
    • Carpooling
    • Getting dropped off and picked up (especially if you have mobility issues)

Thank you again for your patience at this time.

We understand the parking situation at Mills Memorial Hospital is frustrating right now - for staff, physicians, patients and visitors. Not enough spots are available at certain times of the day. It’s probably taking more time to find a spot, and you likely have to walk a longer distance from your vehicle to the hospital than you’d like.

    More parking spots are coming

We know insufficient parking has been a challenge at the hospital for a while, and the construction of the new hospital put more pressure on the situation.

Adequate parking for patients, visitors, staff and physicians was an important consideration of the new hospital design. Parking at the new hospital will be double what it was at the current hospital, increasing from 150 to 300 spots. (And yes! Parking will continue to be free.) The majority of those parking spots won’t be ready until the middle of 2026, however, when the project is complete.

Northern Health and PCL have come up with some creative solutions in the interim. We’ve maximized the use of the site by building temporary parking lots as space has become available. We are repainting the lines in the existing parking lots to maximize efficiency.

The reality of the situation, however, is that parking will remain a challenge until all new spots are in place and the project is complete. And during the winter months, the situation will be even more challenging as street parking is not allowed.

    Recommendations

There’s no perfect solution. In the meantime, we ask you to consider:

    • Arriving early
    • Carpooling
    • Getting dropped off and picked up (especially if you have mobility issues)

Thank you for your consideration and patience during this time!

New staff parking lot should be ready in November.

    Parking situation continues to evolve

The parking situation at Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace continues to evolve, as construction of the new hospital continues.

About a year ago, a temporary gravel parking lot for staff was built to the left of the existing hospital’s main entrance on Haugland Avenue. That lot is now closed temporarily, as the space is being used to facilitate construction of a larger lot to it’s left, directly south of the new Seven Sisters facility.

After the new parking lot south of Seven Sisters is paved, the gravel parking lot and its fencing will revert to how it was and once again be ready for staff use, by mid-October, weather permitting.

Construction work will continue on the new paved lot to make it safe for use (for example, lights will be installed). This new lot should be open for use by the end of November, also weather permitting, and provide approximately 18 new staff parking spots.

    Parking challenges and solutions

We know parking at the hospital and Seven Sisters is challenging and has been for a while ─ for staff, patients and visitors.

When the Mills Memorial Hospital Replacement project is complete, in 2026, the new hospital will have about 300 parking spaces. This is double the number of parking spots the hospital started with at the beginning of the project in 2021.

And yes. Parking at the hospital will continue to be free!

The bulk of the parking spaces for the new facility will be where the existing hospital stands, and so won’t be available until after that facility is demolished and the new lot is built by mid-2026.

As the project advances, Northern Health will continue to work on creating parking solutions for staff and visitors while juggling building the new hospital and supporting operations at the existing one.

We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

Starting this week and over the next couple months, workers will be preparing to pave the road that runs along the west side of the Mills Memorial Hospital property. They will also be developing another 18 temporary unpaved parking spots near Haugland Avenue, south of the new Seven Sisters.

The work may result in a temporary increase of noise, vibration, dust and at times, smells. While these impacts may be unavoidable, as usual, we will minimize their severity and duration wherever and whenever possible.

This work will occur during regular construction site working hours (7am to 7pm). We aim to share more details as the work proceeds. However, the schedule of the work often depends on the conditions needed to perform tasks and this information is not always predictable ahead of time.

Paving will start at the south end of the site, near Haugland Avenue and proceed north towards Keith Avenue and then east, towards Tetrault Street.

The road being paved, currently being used for construction purposes, is the service road for the new hospital. The service road gives service vehicles and delivery trucks safe access to the property while minimizing disruption to emergency, staff, patient and visitor traffic.

Yes! Parking at the hospital will continue to be free.

In other good news, parking is doubling, increasing from approximately 150 to 300 spots.

Adequate parking for patients, visitors and staff is an issue at the current hospital and an important part of the new build.

A significant number of the parking spots at the new facility will be where the existing hospital now stands. For this reason, parking for the entire project won't be complete until the middle of 2026. It can only be completed after the new hospital is already in operations and the current facility has been removed. Northern Health is working on finding solutions for parking in the interim.

New, temporary, employee parking lot in front of hospital

Ultimately, parking at the new Mills Memorial Hospital will be double what’s available now, going from approximately 150 to 300 spaces.

In the meantime, however, as the project’s main contractor PCL and Northern Health delicately juggle building a new hospital while continuing to operate the current hospital on the same site, visitors will once again notice a change in parking.

    The most recent changes include:

    1. A new, temporary, employee-only parking lot has been added on Haugland Avenue, west of the main entrance.

    2. The parking lot next to the psychiatric ward, just off Haugland Avenue, is no longer accessible.

    3. Only authorized vehicles are now allowed in the parking area just beyond the emergency department. This means visitors can no longer park in that area nor drive through and exit onto Haugland Avenue.

Area close to emergency department now only open to authorized vehicles

These changes are necessary as construction of the new hospital continues and site prep work for the new Seven Sisters facility begins.

To alleviate the impact of these steps in the construction process, last summer, PCL built a temporary gravel parking lot with 70 new spots. This new lot adjacent to Tetrault Street, in between the current hospital and current Seven Sisters facility, has been in use since July 2021.

Thank you for adhering to all parking rules as we move forward with this exciting project!

A new parking lot on the east side of the Mills Memorial hospital site, which fits approximately 70 vehicles, is now available for use.

The new gravel lot, adjacent to Tetrault Street and north of the hospital, aims to accommodate a growing number of hospital staff and reduce street parking. Because of its distance to the hospital entrance, the new lot is intended mainly for staff use. However, the spots have no restrictions.

This lot is temporary and will be removed when the area is required to accommodate the building of the new hospital – likely in the summer of 2023.
